This project explores seaweed’s potential to purify seawater by removing phosphates and capturing CO₂, contributing to cleaner water and climate mitigation. After harvesting, phosphorus can be recovered and transformed through bioprocesses into biofertilizer and bioenergy.
• Seaweed can clean seawater from phosphates and adsorb CO2. • Seawater purification, biomass recovery, and global warming control are potential applications. • Phosphorus can be recovered from seaweeds after harvest. • Cultivation and valorization of seaweed through bioprocesses is a promising pathway for phosphate-rich biofertilizer and bioenergy production. • The scale-up of the bioprocess will have social and economic impacts on the southern regions of the Kingdom.
