The project addresses antibiotic pollution, a major threat to human and animal health. Conventional treatments like WWTPs, composting, and anaerobic degradation help reduce pollutants, but livestock residues still release persistent contaminants into soils and aquifers.
• Antibiotic pollution is a major threat to human and animal health. • Conventional residue/effluent treatments (WWTPs, composting and anaerobic degradation) are effective in removing emergent pollutants. • Livestock residues are inevitably released into the environment, loading soils and aquifers with recalcitrant pollutants. • Dissemination of highly recalcitrant pollutants in the environment is considered a challenging issue worldwide.
