Pr. Irfan Afzal earned his Ph.D. from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan in 2005, and brings over 24 years of teaching and research experience in seed science, climate-resilient crops, and nutrient-dense crops.
In 2007, he was awarded the Fulbright scholarship to conduct research on seed respiration and germination models at the Seed Biotechnology Center, UC Davis, USA. He also received the Australian Endeavour Research Award and Executive Award in 2010 and 2016. From 2012 to 2017, he was recognized with the Research Productivity Award by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan.
Dr. Afzal has supervised 5 Ph.D. students and 50 Master’s students, many of whom now serve in key roles across public and private sectors. He has published over 120 research papers in internationally reputed journals and completed 17 national and international research projects.
He has presented his research at numerous scientific conferences in the US, Australia, Poland, Spain, Malaysia, Turkey, and India. He is recognized for registering the first quinoa and chia varieties as superfoods and holds a patent for Climate Smart Storage Technology.
Dr. Afzal also offers consultancy services to national and international organizations. Recently, he served as a Seed Consultant with FAO-RAP, Thailand, and as an International Seed Consultant for the World Bank in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
