BIO

Dr. Younes Boundir is a marine scientist and phycologist specializing in sustainable aquaculture and the cultivation of macroalgae, with a particular focus on seaweed biology, marine ecology, and its applications in food systems, and coastal ecosystem restoration. Dr. Boundir earned his Ph.D. in Marine Biology and Algology from Cadi Ayyad University, where his dissertation focused on the physiological responses of brown seaweed Cystoseira to anthropogenic stressors. Over the past 10 years, his work has contributed to advancing seaweed cultivation and supporting coastal community livelihoods in Morocco and improving the efficiency and environmental sustainability of seaweed farming practices. Previously a Senior Researcher and Project manager at the Bantry Marine Research Station in Ireland, Dr. Boundir leads projects investigating the optimization of growth conditions for Asparagopsis armata, and previously the cultivation of economically important species such as Kappaphycus alvarezii in Lombok Island, Indonesia, and Ulva spp in Nador, Northern Morocco. His work bridges laboratory experimentation and field-based aquaculture trials, often collaborating with local coastal communities and industry partners to enhance seaweed farming as a livelihood and climate-resilient practice. Dr. Boundir is committed to training the next generation of marine scientists and actively mentors graduate and undergraduate students. His interdisciplinary approach combines Seaweed farming, oceanography, aquaculture engineering, and socio-economic development to support a more sustainable and resilient ocean future.
