Pr. Younes Boundir is a marine scientist and phycologist specializing in sustainable algoculture with a particular focus on seaweed applications, including its use in food, as a rich source of nutrients for fertilizers and animal feed, in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals due to its bioactive compounds, and as a raw material for industrial products like agar and alginates.
Previously a Senior Researcher and Project manager at the Bantry Marine Research Station in Bantry bay, Ireland, Prof. Boundir has led a project investigating the optimization of growth conditions for Asparagopsis armata, and the cultivation of economically important species such as Kappaphycus alvarezii in Lombok Island, Indonesia, and Ulva spp in Nador, Northern Morocco.
His work bridges laboratory experimentation and field based algoculture trials, often collaborating with local coastal communities and industry partners to enhance seaweed farming as a livelihood and climate resilient practice. Over the past 10 years, his work has contributed to advancing seaweed cultivation and supporting coastal community livelihoods in Morocco and elsewhere, improving the efficiency and environmental sustainability of seaweed farming practices.
